Malls V3.0: Re-Imagining the Future of Large Scale Retail Space

Southlake Mall v1.0: Malls were always a blast to visit with friends and family.

When Cubework purchased the empty but beloved Southlake Mall in Merrillville, IN (also known as the Carson Pirie Scott Mall), they did so with a purpose: to create “Malls V3.0”. But before we get into what that means, let’s remember what malls were, and are. Here’s a look at the Cubework Southlake Mall info sheet.

Malls have a long, powerful retail history in the United States. Almost everyone has a memory—or many memories—of “let’s go to the mall.” Truly, it was an event to savor, be it with friends to get cool clothes mixed with a flirting mission; family for household goods; video game and CD stores; computers, everything was at the mall—not to mention the fabled food courts!

But tastes and times changed, especially the rise of the internet and ecommerce, which made those wonderful trips to the malls less inviting.

What Cubework wants to do with the Southlake Mall is create a space for the new generation of shoppers. Popup stores, ghost kitchens, popup health and beauty, workout spaces, and inventory storage are all options that can be created.

Malls seem old fashioned, right? Not anymore: all of that glorious space is being re-imagined for today’s generation of fast fashion shoppers, popup kitchen foodies, and everything in between. It’ll be an amazing journey as Cubework becomes a pioneer in putting classic mall space to inviting, fresh and innovative uses.
